The ICLEI World Congress 2015

The ICLEI World Congress 2015 took place in Seoul South Korea from 8 – 12 April 2015.

During the ICLEI World Congress 2015, over 2,500 participants from 249 local governments worldwide gathered in Seoul to deliver “Sustainable Solutions for an Urban Future”. The newly built DDP: Dongdaemun Design Plaza, located in the center of downtown Seoul, hosted the 5 day event.

ICLEI World Congress 2015 featured 15 plenaries, 29 sessions and 20 side events, including a two-day Urban Nature conference, a Researchers’ Symposium, and the URBIO conference.

During the ICLEI World Congress 2015,  the new ICLEI President, Mayor Park Won Soon, the Mayor of Seoul and host of the Congress, was officially elected and inaugurated, as well as  First Vice President Mayor James Nxumalo (Durban, South Africa), and Vice Presidents Mayor Miguel Angel Mancera (Mexico City, Mexico) and Mayor Pekka Sauri (Helsinki, Finland).

During the Congress, numerous results and milestones occurred including:

  • The Seoul Declaration was introduced, a promise to set a clear path to global urban sustainability.
  • Thirty-six cities announced their intent to comply with the Compact of Mayors – the global coalition of Mayors and city leaders preparing for the impacts of climate change.
  • ICLEI President and Mayor of Seoul Park Won Soon launched the Promise of Seoul, which commits Seoul to reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by 40% by 2030 from 2005 levels.
  • Numerous partnerships were forged as ICLEI signed 11 MOUs with partner organizations, and Seoul signed 15 MOUs with other local governments.
  • The ICLEI World Congress 2015 saw the launching of 3 new initiatives, CityFood, the 100% Renewable Energy ICLEI Community, and the Global Sustainable Public Procurement Network.
  • The Congress also saw the launch of the ICLEI Strategic Plan 2015-2021, which details how ICLEI will work with its members in the years to come. ICLEI’s Korea Office also presented its Korean strategic plan, outlining how they will implement the global strategy at the national level.

ICLEI World Congress

Every three years, ICLEI members and partners gather at an ICLEI World Congress to showcase their actions over the period and discuss strategies for the following years. Each edition of the ICLEI World Congress saw representatives of local governments from all over the world equip themselves firsthand with the practical know-how of their top performing counterparts, all the while profiling their cities’ achievements in the spotlight.
