Mayor of Reykjavik City
Dagur B. Eggertsson is the Mayor of Reykjavik City. He is educated as a physician and has a master’s degree in Human Rights and International Law from the University of Lund in Sweden. Dagur held chairmanship in the planning committee of Reykjavík from 2004-2006 and chaired the executive board of the city from 2010 until he bacame mayor. Dagur has been an advocate for change in attitude towards planning and redevelopment in the City of Reykjavík, with emphasis on a more sustainable way of living e.g. through densification of urban areas.
Reykjavík City won the Nordic Council Nature and Environment Prize in 2014 for the city‘s accomplishments in renewable energy. The city of Reykjavík currently uses 100% renewable energy with geothermal and hydro power plants. Next steps towards a more sustainable city is to convert transportation which is almost solely run on fossil fuels.
