General Manager, City of Edmonton
Gary Klassen is the General Manager of Sustainable Development and a member of the Senior Executive Team for the City of Edmonton. He provides strategic leadership to branches regarding urban policy and environment, housing, economic sustainability and transformational projects. He oversees significant initiatives including: the redevelopment of the City Centre airport into “Blatchford” – a world class sustainable community, the City’s Arena District – the renewal of Edmonton’s downtown, advancement of city strategy regarding economic prosperity, and overall planning and development operations for the City.
Gary is also past president of the Canadian Institute of Planners, past president of the Alberta Association, Canadian Institute of Planners, and a Council member of the International Federation of Housing and Planning in The Hague.
