Mayor Nxumalo embodies what it means to be an African leader. He understands the challenges of Africa and the particular vulnerabilities of its people and throughout his career has consistently demonstrated his commitment to human rights and social justice. Since taking responsibility for leading the city of Durban, he has also championed the need to tackle the complex environmental issues facing Africa’s cities, especially climate change, and the role that local governments need to play in ensuring resilient and sustainable cities that will improve the quality of life of the people living in them. Mayor Nxumalo is currently serving as the Chair of the Adaptation and Risk Reduction Portfolio in ICLEI Africa Committee and the Chair of the South African Local Government Association’s Climate Change Champions Committee.
