President & CEO, World Council on City Data
Patricia McCarney is President and CEO of the World Council on City Data (WCCD), and a Professor of Political Science and Director of the Global Cities Institute (GCI) at the University of Toronto.
Patricia McCarney currently chairs the ISO Working Group 2 under the Technical Committee 268, Sustainable Development in Communities, and was integral to the development of the newly published ISO 37120 International Standard for Sustainable Cities, the first ISO Standard for Cities now hosted at the World Council on City Data (WCCD). The WCCD is building a globally standardized data base for cities worldwide in conformity with ISO 37120. McCarney is now chairing ISO Working Group 2 for a new Technical Report that was approved by ISO to proceed with the development of a new ISO Standard – ISO 37121 on Indicators for Cities and Resilience.
Before joining the University of Toronto, between 1983 and 1994, McCarney worked as a professional staff member in a number of international agencies, including the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) in Ottawa, the World Bank in Washington, and the United Nations Centre for Human Settlements (UN-HABITAT) in Nairobi.
Patricia McCarney is the author of seven books – most recently: Cities and Global Governance: New Sites for International Relations (2011) and Peri-Urban Water and Sanitation Services: Policy, Planning and Method (2011) – as well as the forthcoming two books tentatively titled ‘Global Cities, Global Prosperity: Measuring Risk and Opportunity,’ and ‘Building Resilient Cities: Planning, Management and Governance.’ McCarney is also the author of numerous articles and papers, including recent contributions: “Cities and climate change: The challenges for governance” and “Urban Land and Climate Strategies” in Climate Change and Cities: First Assessment Report of the Urban Climate Change Research Network (Cambridge University Press 2011).
