Mayor of the City of Yarra
Phillip Vlahogiannis is the Mayor of the City of Yarra — an inner city municipality of metropolitan Melbourne which is one of Australia’s leading sustainable cities. Not only was Yarra the first Victorian Council to be recognised as a certified carbon neutral organisation, it was also the first local government in Australia to achieve national One Planet certification. A commercial lawyer with experience working on technology and public sector projects, Cr Vlahogiannis is a lifelong resident of Cremorne, a suburb once home to factories and their workers (including immigrants like his parents) that now blends a gentrifying and densifying residential population with an eclectic mix of small and medium service-based, creative and technology-related businesses. He is passionate about inclusive community engagement and believes local governments like Yarra have a vital leadership role in creating healthy, inclusive and sustainable communities.
