Chief Executive Officer, City of Yarra
Vijaya Vaidyanath is the CEO of the City of Yarra in Melbourne. Prior to this role Vijaya spent over a decade as CEO at Waitakere City Council a very large metro City in New Zealand and as the CEO of Rodney District Council in New Zealand. Vijaya is the first person of Indian origin to be a CEO in Local Government in Australia and New Zealand. She also worked for 15 years as a senior Executive in the Reserve Bank in India with brief stints in the USA before migrating to New Zealand. Vijaya was the former Board Member of Bank of Baroda New Zealand and Massey University and Advisory Member of various Government Boards in New Zealand. She is now a Board Member on Procurement Australia.
Vijaya leads an entity with assets worth billions of dollars, leading hundreds of professional staff, managing a range of services from roads and transport, economic development, tourism, human services, environment and open space, urban design and land use planning, infrastructure renewal and community strengthening initiatives. City of Yarra was recently recognised as Victoria’s first carbon neutral Council under the Australian Government’s National Carbon Offset Standard (NCOS). Last year Yarra City won the overall Environmental Management award from the United Nations Organisation, Australasia and this year the City of Yarra is the first local government in Australia, and only the third in the world, to be officially certified as a ‘One Planet Council’, recognition which is reserved for exemplary regions around the globe who are leading the charge on sustainable living.
Vijaya’s exemplary qualifications include a Senior Executive Fellow of the John F Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University, MBA from JMKatz Graduate School of Business in Pittsburgh USA, Master of Arts (Economics) and a Bachelor of Arts (Economics) from the University of Bangalore.
